Duggan Veterinary Supplies partner up with Abbotts Animal Health

This November Duggan Veterinary Supplies where delighted to introduce a brand new anaesthetic range to the Irish market. As sole distributors for Abbott Animal Health, we are now supplying two much sought after products for the Companion animal industry. PropoFlo™ Plus and IsoFlo ™ have been developed by Abbott Animal Health, a global leader in veterinary healthcare. For over 100 years, Abbott have developed and manufactured a wide range of quality veterinary health care products.
The PropoFlo™ Plus is now available registered under AR16 and comes in 20ml vials containing 10mg/ml of propofol. The well-known intravenous anaesthetic induction agent PropoFlo™Plus has been used for over ten years on the UK market. This used and trusted product has now been updated to cater for the needs of practitioners further with the advancement of its composition incorporating preservative properties; PropoFlo™ Plus is designed to reduce anaesthetic waste.
Using Propoflo™ Plus provides patients with the smooth, rapid induction and recovery veterinary surgeons have come to expect from propofol. With the recent developments in its composition PropoFlo™ Plus has the added benefit of providing a 28day shelf life once opened. This additional benefit offers practitioner’s huge savings by eliminating product wastage and the additional costs of waste disposal of any unused product. The easily identifiable milky white solution causes no pain on injection and local tissue reactions are rare with inadvertent perivascular administration. PropoFlo™ Plus is compatible with a variety of pre-medication combinations such as Alpha² agonists, benzodiazepines, phenothiazines and opioids. PropoFlo™ Plus dosage range is as low as 1mg/kg when using α² agonist/opioid premedication to 6.5mg/kg in dogs with no premedicant. Using multimodal protocols not only reduces the risk of anaesthetic side effects but can also offer the most cost effective regime. With no contra-indications, other than when anaesthesia itself is contraindicated or a known hypersensitivity to propofol, PropoFlo™ Plus is the induction agent of choice for cats and dogs. Whether you use a premedication combinations such as medetomidine / butorphanol or diazepam, acepromazine or morphine, you can always be assured you are choosing the safest anaesthetic protocol for the patient at hand when using PropoFlo™ Plus.
IsoFlo is a gaseous Isoflurane anaesthetic agent. Complementing the PropoFlo™ Plus induction, IsoFlo is more commonly used at lower concentrations for maintenance of anaesthesia. IsoFlo can also be used for the induction of anaesthesia at higher concentrations. IsoFlo provides easy to control depth of anaesthesia with relatively rapid induction and recovery times. Isoflurane causes less myocardial depression as seen with agents such as Halothane. It is safe to use in patients with renal and hepatic deficiencies as good renal blood flow is maintained and less than 2% is metabolised via the liver. Recovery is not dependent on drug metabolisation, it is mainly eliminated via the lungs and due to the low solubility in fatty tissues the agent does not accumulate in obese individuals. IsoFlo is available under the cascade AR18 and is supplied in a 250ml amber bottle.
When purchasing these products not only are you availing of the highest standard of customer service and support by our new Companion Animal Manager and team but you have at your fingertips the technical and professional support of Abbott Animal Healthcare renowned for providing one of highest standards of quality service for the global veterinary industry.

Release of Irish Field and Marketing Studies on Startvac – First mastitis vaccine for mastitis

Over the next few weeks Duggan Veterinary will be publishing results on Startvac from Irish Field and Marketing studies on various national publications and also on their website www.dugganvet.ie/startvac.htm.  These results are being analysed by UCC and will show the benefits of vaccinating against mastitis (Staph. aureus, CNS, Coliforms and Ecoli) on a farm in Waterford, Tipperary, Monaghan and Limerick.

The control of Staph. aureus mastitis is centered on hygienic milking procedures, proper milking machine maintenance, appropriate therapy and culling of chronic cows. Another aid to PREVENT against mastitis is STARTVAC. It works by boosting the cows immune system during times of highest risk of infection to the cow. With 2 doses given prior to calving and one after calving.

Staphyloccus aureus continues to be the most frequently isolated pathogen from milk sample submissions (43.6 percent). The 2009 percentage, however, represents an appreciable increase when compared to 2008 (35.2 per cent) and suggests that progress has not been made in the prevention and control of this pathogen (Regional Veterinary Laboratories – Surveillance Report 2009).
